The Modern Web Development Stack: What We Use and Why
The tools we choose for fast, maintainable web applications, from React and TypeScript to PostgreSQL and serverless, and the trade-offs behind each.
The right stack is the one your team can maintain after launch. These are our defaults and why we pick them.
Front end: React and TypeScript
React has a large ecosystem and hiring pool. TypeScript catches many bugs before they reach users. For pages that must rank in search, we pair React with server or static rendering.
Styling: Tailwind CSS
Utility classes keep styles consistent and close to the markup, and unused styles are removed at build time.
Back end: serverless functions and Node.js
Serverless functions handle most business logic without managing servers. We use long-running services when a workload needs them.
Database: PostgreSQL
PostgreSQL handles relational data well, and with row-level security and real-time subscriptions it covers most application needs.
Delivery: CI/CD
Automated tests and deployments make releases routine, which is what you want.
Performance from the start
Lazy loading, code splitting, image optimization and caching are part of the build, not a cleanup project. They also support SEO. See web development for what we build with this stack.
