How to Get Your Business Mentioned in ChatGPT and AI Search

What makes ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention a business, and the steps to improve your chances.

By C2F Team · · 3 min read

More buyers now ask an AI assistant for a shortlist before they search Google. If ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews leave your company out of that answer, you are not in the running. This guide explains what these tools look at and the steps that improve your chances of being mentioned. The practice is called generative engine optimization, or GEO.

How AI assistants choose which businesses to mention

AI assistants draw on two sources. The first is what the model learned during training. The second is live retrieval: when an assistant searches the web to answer a question, it reads a handful of pages and cites some of them. You can influence both, but retrieval responds faster to changes you make.

Pages that get retrieved and cited tend to share some traits. They answer the question directly near the top. They state facts plainly, such as what the company does, for whom and where. They are consistent with what other sites say about the company. And they are easy for crawlers to reach and read.

Step 1: Let AI crawlers in

Check your robots.txt file. Many sites block AI crawlers by accident through a security plugin or a template default. The main ones to allow are GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot for OpenAI, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended for Gemini training, and the regular Googlebot and Bingbot, since Google AI Overviews and Copilot rely on those indexes.

Also make sure your important content is in the HTML the server sends. Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so a site that builds its content in the browser can look empty to them. Our technical SEO audit for React websites covers this problem.

Step 2: Write answer-first pages

For each service, write a page whose first paragraph says exactly what you offer and who it is for. Use headings phrased the way buyers ask questions. Add an FAQ section with short, complete answers. An assistant can quote a two-sentence answer. It struggles with a page of slogans.

Step 3: Publish clear facts about your company

Create an about page and a short facts summary: name, what you do, services, industries, location if you have one, and how to contact you. Keep the same wording on LinkedIn, directories and review sites. When the facts disagree across sources, models hedge or skip you.

Step 4: Add structured data and an llms.txt file

Structured data (schema.org) tells machines what a page is about: Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article and BreadcrumbList are the most useful for service businesses. An llms.txt file is a plain-text summary of your site with links to key pages, written for AI tools. It is a small step, but it gives assistants a clean source to read. You can see our llms.txt file as an example.

Step 5: Earn mentions on sites AI tools trust

Assistants often cite review platforms, industry directories, news articles, comparison posts and community threads. Being listed and discussed there matters as much as your own pages. Practical starting points are complete profiles on the directories for your category, client reviews, guest articles in industry publications and helpful answers in communities where your buyers ask questions.

How to rank in Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews draw mostly from pages that already rank well, so classic SEO still matters most here. Beyond rankings, the same answer-first structure helps: a direct answer near the top, headings that match the question, FAQ markup where it fits and content that stays current.

Measure with an AI visibility audit

Pick ten to twenty prompts a buyer might use, such as "best AI chatbot development companies for small business". Run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google, and record whether you are mentioned, which competitors are named and which sources are cited. Repeat monthly. The cited sources tell you where to earn mentions next.

If you want this done for you, our generative engine optimization services start with exactly this audit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?

Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt, publish answer-first pages that state what you do and who you serve, keep your company facts consistent across the web, add structured data and an llms.txt file, and earn mentions on review sites and industry publications that AI tools cite.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

Changes that affect live retrieval, such as crawler access and clear pages, can show up within weeks once pages are recrawled. Changes to what models learned in training take longer and depend on future model updates.

Does SEO still matter for AI search?

Yes. Google AI Overviews and Copilot rely on search indexes, and many assistants retrieve pages that already rank. GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
